Key Ideas and Details: Reading: Literature Standard 2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.
Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Writing Standard 7: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.
Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas: Speaking and Listening Standard 4: Present claims and findings, sequencing ideas logically and using pertinent descriptions, facts, and details to accentuate main ideas or themes; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
Range of Writing: Writing Standard 10: Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Materials: Capital Invention worksheet for each student (attached), book, Homer Price, by Robert McCloskey, & pencil. For lesson extension, computers and research materials are needed.

The book, Homer Price, consists of six stories. In "The Doughnuts," Homer's Uncle Ulysses's newest capital resource, the doughnut machine, goes on a rampage making hundreds of doughnuts. In the process of figuring out how to sell the doughnuts, Homer helps a woman find her bracelet which she lost in the doughnut machine.
In the activities provided, students research inventions that have improved productivity and fill in note cards with their findings.

Materials: Play money in small, easily dividable denominations, 2 sets of markers, construction paper, 6 quarts or half gallons of ice cream, 2 bottles of caramel toppings, 4 pints of milk, 3 blenders for the milkshakes, 1 package of cups which can be divided up as needed, 1 package of bowls which can be divided up as needed, 1 package of spoons which can be divided up as needed, 1 package of napkins which can be divided up as needed, 1 box of straws which can be divided up as needed, 3 ice cream scoopers, 3 bottles of chocolate syrup, straws
Time: Two – 1 hour classes
Students will learn about supply, demand, price, competition, and entrepreneurial skills in this lesson. They will put what they learned into action by creating an ice cream stand, to compete with other stands in the classroom.
