Goods and Services Centers

Financial and Economic Concepts: Goods & Services, Producers & Consumers

Second Grade – Social Studies

Standard 4: Students will explain how the economy meets human needs through the interaction of producers and consumers.

Objective 2: Describe the choices people make in using goods and services.

Explain the following (PPT):  Producers are people who make goods or provide services.  Producers receive income for their work.

Consumers are people who buy services and goods.  Consumers have many choices to make about what to buy.

Consumers cannot buy everything they would like to because money is limited.  People’s choices about which goods and services they want and need determine what producers make.

Goods are physical objects that are made that can be weighed or measured.

Services are tasks performed by people or machines.

Center Activities:

  1. Draw goods and services used in their families.
  2. Plan a vacation in your mind.  List all of the goods and services that your family will consume on the trip.
  3. Write a paragraph entitled “My Favorite Goods and Services I Consume Every Day”
  4. Cut pictures from magazines to construct a poster called either “Goods and Services” or “Producers and Consumers.”

To end the activity, play “Clap-Clap/Stomp-Stomp”  Students clap when you call out a good, stomp when you call out a service.
